Files created during upgrade from XP

There appear to be file backups made of my original Windows XP install when
I upgraded to Vista Home Premium.

Is it required that the directories be maintained or can they be deleted
once things seem to be in working order and no plans to revert.

If so is there a list of the files that can be safely deleted, or would it
be wise to burn these to disk before deletion.

Thanks in advance for your help

Found with a Google search:

Windows.old contains your previous XP installation. It is difficult to
remove it manually so let Vista do the work for you.

Remove Windows.old:

1. Click Start
2. Select All Programs
3. Select Accessories
4. Click System Tools
5. Pick Disc Cleanup
6. Select Files from all users on this computer
7. Confirm the UAC
8. Select the drive that contains your old installation
9. One of the options will be to delete your old installation. Select it
and let the Disc Cleanup Utility do its thing.

Obviously you should do this after you are sure you don't want any of
the XP data files. Don't forget Favorites and email addresses.
