| | Slow file copy to USB device Hi again, I've got a brand new USB 2.0 Maxtor external drive and Vista reports my speed for copying a folder of about 10,000 files and 36Gb is only 14MB/sec. Why so slow? It's estimating it will take 45 minutes. On XP I could do this in about 15 minutes. This is on a brand new Dell D820 with Vista Ultimate, 3GB of RAM, all ports USB2, both external and internal hard drives are 7200RPM. Nothing running except for Windows Mail to write this post. Any ideas what I can do to speed this up? Thanks, -Bob |

| | Re: Slow file copy to USB device Check the power usage on the USB device. Make sure you have plenty of power. You may want to try another USB port. What else do you have on the same usb hub? See what other Bandwidth consuming devices you have.. Check your Device Manager. Look at the properties of your USB devices and USB Host Controllers. | | Re: Slow file copy to USB device Did you optimize your external drive for "performance" in device manager. It makes a difference in the through put. -- Regards, Richard Urban MVP Microsoft Windows Shell/User "just bob" <kilbyfan-aol@net.com> wrote in message news:OqAytK3XHHA.3928@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > Hi again, > > I've got a brand new USB 2.0 Maxtor external drive and Vista reports my > speed for copying a folder of about 10,000 files and 36Gb is only > 14MB/sec. > > Why so slow?
