| Guest | Re: Searching for part of a file name If you are just searching for a special characters like "+", by default you won't necessarily get the results you expect as Vista uses a word-based index, rather than a character-based search. If you specifically search for filenames with the filename: keyword and use a wildcard this does switch on character mode. So searching for: filename:*++ does give me what I expect. I agree this is not very intuitive. What does the tilde character do? |

| Guest | Re: Searching for part of a file name It tells Search to allow wildcards ( * or ?) within the otherwise exact text contained within the quotation marks. -- Good Luck, Keith Microsoft MVP [Windows XP Shell/User] "just bob" <kilbyfan-aol@net.com> wrote in message news:OGEZAAraHHA.4948@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > > "Keith Miller MVP" <k.miller79@no.spam.verizon.net> wrote in message > news:%23YbI51naHHA.4220@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >> In the Search box, if you type: >> >> name:~"*+*" >> >> it will return all files with the '+' character in their name. > > What does the tilde character do? |

For example, I'm searching a folder for pictures with the underscore character in the name, i.e., "file_name". Using your suggestion, I type "name:~"*_*" in the search box and I get every file in the folder listed, even those with no underscore character. What's up? Thanks, Dave |

| Guest | Re: Searching for part of a file name I was reduced to shouting at the computer in frustration because I wanted to find all the filese with (2) in the filename but I did not want to find files with only 2 in the file name. So I tried typing Name: *(2)*.* but this gave all files containing any of those characters. Thankyou for that info in previous post telling me instead to enter in the box at top right of screen: Name: ~*(2)*.* Brilliant, now I get only the files I want. That would have been much easire in Windows XP. In fact windows XP search was brilliant and very easy to use. I have not found anything in windows Vista search that is the slightest bit helpful. -- GrayBeard Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |
