file associations

I want vista to let me open excel files (.xls extensions) with Corel Quattro
Pro. I've gone thru the various methods of changing the file associations,
but can't get it to stay. I select a file with an .xls extension, select
"open with" browse to "qpw.exe", try to select it and say ok, but get dumped
back to the previous screen.

Help.

thanks.

Re: file associations

Ed,

See if re-registering qpw.exe (in the Windows registry) using the following program helps.

Registering programs with the "Open With" dialog:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/openwithadd.htm

Re: file associations

Thanks. re-registering has put the quattro pro on the menu of choices, but
the box that asks if I want to use it for all files with a specific
extension is grayed out. progress, but no cigar yet.

thanks again.

How are you accessing the Open With screen. Can you list out the steps for me to repro the problem? Also, a file association report for .xls would help.

1. Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

2. Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
3. Double-click "FileExtInfo.exe" to run it.
4. Select ".xls" from the list
5. Click "View file association report"
6. Copy the contents of the report and include it in your reply.

Re: file associations

Thanks again. It now seems to be working! I'm not sure if I just didn't
reboot before (I thought I did) or if something else was going on, but the
association seems to be working on a regular basis now. I really appreciate
the help.
