Re: CHM file extension not recognized or supported

Fritz

The help files were completely changed in Vista. The older file format is no
longer supported, but they have provided a workaround. Read the article in
first link here and then click the second link to download the file that
will enable you to read the older.chm formatted files.

The Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program is no longer included with Windows
operating systems starting with Windows Vista:

Download details: WinHlp32.exe for Windows Vista:

Hello Fritz,

The CHM format is supported in Vista and should work unless your file
association is broken. Did you download the actual manuals from Nero?
The .chm files in the main Nero 7 Essentials download (7.8.5) are
empty except for an error message. They did this to reduce the size
of the download. However, the link to the full manual in the CHM file
is broken.

The "real" manuals have to be tracked down and downloaded individually
from various pages on the Nero site. Then you have to copy the
downloads over the existing .chm files, one by one. It's a real pain,
made worse by the fact that their instructions are incorrect!

Thank you for your time in giving me your advice. If the helpfiles are
incorrect then it's no use having them installed.Regards Fritz

Re: CHM file extension not recognized or supported

Thank you for your time in giving me your advice. I've read the microsoft
information page and decided that Vista security is more important than the
CHM files.Regards Fritz

Re: CHM file extension not recognized or supported

Compiled HTML Help Files (.chm's) are a mainstay of many programs on your
Computer, and Vista has a few as well. Go to Control Panel > Default
Programs and click on "Associate a file type with a program". In the the
Set Associations window, find .chm and double-click on it. In the Open With
dialog click on browse. Go to C:\Windows and choose the file hh.exe
(Microsoft® HTML Help Executable). Hh.exe has a yellow question mark icon,
and will give that icon to all .chm files as well, once the association is
made.

Fritz,

You are welcome, but the files are correct and work fine after
downloading and copying over the old versions. It's just the
instructions for installing them that are incorrect. The instructions
tell you to put all the CHM files in the Nero folder. In fact, each
CHM file must be copied to the folder for the feature that it covers.

Also, the Nero site has PDF versions of most of their help files.

Re: CHM file extension not recognized or supported

Hi
I've managed to solve the cmh file being recognized by Vista Business. The
real culprit had been the Acrobat Reader. When I installed Nero v7.... all
the chm helpfiles worked on its interface. As soon as I installed the Acrobat
reader all chm or help files in Nero where not supported anymore. I did a
reformat installed Nero and and downloaded the helpfiles I wanted from Nero &
installed them one by one into its proper folder. Then instead of installing
the Acrobat Reader I choose Foxit Reader which does the same job as Acrobat
but didn't change my chm helpfiles in Nero. Foxit Reader is free of charge.

I hope that I was able to help somebody with my workaround at this problem
Good Look Fritz
