Permission to change file name?

When I first set up my Windows Vista computer, I created a file called Audio,
and have a lot of mp3's in this file.

I decided to rename the file. I right click on it, and when I try to click
rename, I'm told that I do not have permission to do so.

I am the only user of this computer. I have administrator rights.
If I create a sub folder to this folder, and then try to rename or move it,
it allows me to do so.

What must I do to get permission from my own computer to allow me to change
this file name???

This happens quite regularly for me and it's a pita especially when I
have created the directory just like you have!

To allow me to rename or delete I have to take ownership and then
re-apply the permissions.

Re: Permission to change file name?

OK....but how do you 'take ownership' of the file?

Re: Permission to change file name?

If you created the directory C:\Audio be aware that items at the root
(directly under C are protected by the system. In general you should not
add anything to c:\ directly. I would recommend that you create another
directory at c:\users\your name\ for instance and move all of the content of
the c:\audio to that new direcctory.

Re: Permission to change file name?

Thank you, I'll do that.
Is there a way when I'm finished to delete the directory?

Re: Permission to change file name?

In general, right click on the directory. Then click on security tab.
This will show you the permissions for the various account types currently
active on your system.

You should be an 'administrator' so that is the most important one to look
at. If that group show that it has
'full control' you should be able to delete the directory!

Changing owner is done by clicking on the 'advanced tab'
Then on the Owner tab. This should show you the current owner, and show
yourself as the 'change owner option'.
Use 'Edit' button to make the change.
If you are already the owner then perhaps there are additional
complications.
