why can´t I open .doc and .wps files attached to email?

When I try to open a .doc or a .wps file attached to an email, I get an error
info. When I save the file and try to open it, all is fine. The same used to
be the case with pdf, but that has miraculously repaired itself after an
Adobe-update. I have Vista Home Premium and the email program I use is a
webmail thing. With XP it worked fine and also with another PC I have with
Ultimate and another protetion program. So why not here?Grateful for any
useful tips.

Re: why can´t I open .doc and .wps files attached to email?

Hi bitla50,

Which version of Office do you use? Meanwhile, try this:

1. Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

2. Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
3. Double-click "FileExtInfo.exe" to run it.
4. Select ".DOC" from the list box
5. Click "View file association report"
6. Copy the contents of the report and include it in your reply.

Re: why can´t I open .doc and .wps files attached to email?

Thank you. I solved it more or less by downloading the viewers for word end
excel, but I do not understand why it does not work. I do not have Office on
my laptop with preinstalled Works. Works uses different extensions, but is
able to open and save .doc and .xls files. I tried, it works. So I indicated
to use those programs for opening attached .doc and .xls files, the programs
open all right, but then it says that the file cannot be read because it is
either open already or damaged. By the way, I have the same problem with the
..wps extension, a textdocument created by Works.
When I open the attachments on my PC, where I do have Office, all works fine
so the files are not damaged. What is happening?

Re: why can´t I open .doc and .wps files attached to email?

>> but I do not understand why it does not work

It's a file associations problem. Windows Mail specifically looks for "shell\open" verb in the registry for the file type, and returns an error if the file class is missing the "open" verb.
