system restore keeps stopping with disk IO error

I used to have issues with my disk months ago from the whole nvidia 680i
sata error but I haven't had issues since.
Every time I try to enable system restore on a drive an hour later it will
come back and have the following in the event log.

The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO failure on
    volume C:.

Hoe can I troubleshoot this? Are there logs of information anywhere?
chkdsk always sais nothing is wrong.

just so someone gets an answer for this it appears to be fixed now by doing
    the following.

use acronis true image to make a full backup of C:
the just restore it. works like a charm.
haven't had error messages about volsnap in 18 hours.
