Cannot search by file name

I am trying to find where an application is putting a file. I know indexed
searches are great, but I always get either no files or many totally
unrelated files. To see what is going on, I go to DOCUMENTS under my user
name and copy the name of a .pdf document. I go to search and paste that
name in the search field. Searching indexed or all files, I never find that
file. pdf files are checked in the indexed files selection and users is in
the indexed path.

Hi JED,

Have you checked your Search options to make sure that you have the settings set to what you want for results. Look at the link below for a screenshot with the thorugh seach options selected. It may help with your decision.

Re: Cannot search by file name

I have checked "always search file names and contents." I had also tried
"Don't use the index..." and could not find any files even then.

JED,

If you do not want the Indexing Service, then disable it. It will force Vista to use the thorough Search instead. Here is a link for how to do it if needed.

Re: Cannot search by file name

This worked for me. Many thanks.

I also sent your next suggestion to my e-mail address in case I need to do
that. The concept of indexing is good; so far, however, the performance has
not. I feel the product should have assumed you want to search everywhere by
default and point you to help if you want to index.

Anyway, thanks.
