| | Missing System File Hi, so lately my computer has been restarting endlessly, and i don't know why. because of the fact that it was pissing me off beyond belief i was trying to find the system restore file and restore my computer in hopes that it would work. But i couldn't find it. i scanned my computer for every file using search, and i even found the system restore "file" from one of the control panels system configuration files. it showed clearly system restore. However when i hit launch; it would say "The file specified could not be found". now i don't know what the cause of all of these f*** ups is, i'm hoping not a virus, but i still want to do a system restore in hopes that it might work. If anyone could tell me how i can get a missing/corrupt file retriever type of program i would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance. -Kuba |

| | Re: Missing System File System Restore is this file: C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe Is it there? You may want to do this. Run the System File Checker. To do this, right click on Command Prompt (Start Menu\Programs\Accessories), and choose Run as Administrator. Copy the following, and Paste it after the prompt: sfc /scannow Press Enter. It will scan all your system files. It may take a few minutes. If things are okay, you are given the text message "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". If things aren't okay, it will attempt to replace the bad system files. If the Command Prompt shortcut doesn't work, that file is here: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe "Polska" <Polska@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:016B7791-E584-46FA-8EC9-83059D7B1604@microsoft.com... > Hi, > so lately my computer has been restarting endlessly, and i don't know why. > because of the fact that it was pissing me off beyond belief i was trying > to > find the system restore file and restore my computer in hopes that it > would > work. | | Re: Missing System File No dean, the system restore file isn't there. i checked previous to my original thread and again after you replied. And as for the command prompt integrity scan, /quote "You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility." Stupid thing is, i am the administrator for my computer and i have full rights.. Any other idea's ? and by the way. thanks for trying to help ![]() "dean-dean" wrote: > System Restore is this file: > > C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe > > Is it there? > > You may want to do this. > > Run the System File Checker. | | Re: Missing System File You may be an administrator but unless you tell the Command Prompt to run with administrator privileges, it will not do so. Thus you must click on 'cmd.exe' or the menu selection for 'Command Prompt' with the second mouse button and click on 'Run as administrator' to be able to use the scan command. When you do this, the Command Prompt should open, after a UAC confirmation prompt, with the window title beginning 'Administrator: ...' and the location 'C:\Windows\System32'. You can then enter the 'sfc /scannow' command, as suggested, from there. | | Re: Missing System File I ran sfc /scannow. The verification process went to 100% and then the window disappeared. No message was shown. Should I have received a message if everything was okay or if it found and fixed a file? My problem is with the Vista System Restore. When I clicked on a shortcut to System Restore I got: "The ordinal 2 could not be located in the dynamic link library SRRSTR.DLL". However, when I used another method to run System Restore, I found it appears to have created restore points without incident, as numerous Restore Points are present. But when I selected a Restore Point, even the oldest Point, it ran and eventually said: "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. An unspecified error occured during System Restore." What now? Is there a way to fix this without resorting to the Recovery discs I made when the PC was new four months ago? Thanks in advance for your help. Frank |
