| Guest | Arranging numbers as filenames Couldn't find in a search... Have some folders where I save files using numbers as filenames, as an example I save my electronic check images. Windows won't sort them numerically, ie: it will go 100, 1550, 205 etc. instead of 100, 250, 1550. It sorts them as if the numbers are letters, rather than numerically. How can I change this?!?!? It really makes it hard to look for files (ie. did I already save the image of check # 1550?) |

| Guest | RE: Arranging numbers as filenames I tried this in my Vista Home premium and it sorts just like you want. I found this though http://winvistaforums.com/windows-vi...ic-length.html If you have business, Ultimate or enterprize, I believe you can set this in the group policy editor. -- Paul "Soul Man" wrote: > Couldn't find in a search... > > Have some folders where I save files using numbers as filenames, as an > example I save my electronic check images. > Windows won't sort them numerically, ie: it will go 100, 1550, 205 etc. > instead of 100, 250, 1550. | Guest | Re: Arranging numbers as filenames Hi, Soul Man. Maybe this will explain it, although it hasn't yet been updated for Vista: The sort order for files and folders whose names contain numerals is different in Windows XP than it is in Windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/319827 You might prefer this page, by MVP Ramesh: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/xpsortorder.htm My Google search was for "sort order xp" and "sort order vista". | Guest | RE: Arranging numbers as filenames Thanks for the replies. Fred, I already have a lot of files named, and re-naming them all is not really practical. Paul and R.C., I'm not sure how to edit my registry, I'll start working on that. Do those registry keys work for Vista? Paul, you said "I tried this and it worked..", tried what? the registry key? I also have Vista Home Premium. Thanks again! |

| Guest | RE: Arranging numbers as filenames Update: it all seems to be workiing normally now. I did a search on here using the words R.C WHite recommended (one problem I have with searching is knowing the right "buzz words", which is hard when you aren't sure what's going on int he first place). MVP Ramesh has a link to this site: http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/227/1/ which goes into detail. It seems last night my computer started sorting in the old Windows 2000 style, when the XP/Vista style is what I wanted all along. Seems to be correct now for whatever reason.... |
