| | Search for file type takes hours, & finds files on wrong drive. I wanted to find the Outlook .pst files on my C drive. I set the advanced options.. .. Search for *.pst (also tried .pst) .. Location: Local Disk (C ![]() .. Include non-indexed, hidden & system files. In the first 1 second the search returns 7 .pst files from the Recycle bin of my M drive!!! WHY?? Then the search goes on & on & on for hours.. after a further 2 hours it still had not found any more. I let it run all afternoon. When I came back several hours later it had found a few more files with "pst" in the title AND it eventually found my wanted Outlook .pst file. When I did the same search on my XP PC it found my .pst file in a few seconds. Please could someone explain what's going on. Why is it so much harder to get a result in Vista. All the search options are all over the screen instead of in one area, and many of the straightforward choices are not there any more. .. -- chris |

| | Re: Search for file type takes hours, & finds files on wrong drive. Hello, try re-building the Search index by going to Control Panel -> type Search in the search box -> click Indexing Options -> Advanced... -> Rebuild. This should bring your files up-to-date. Hope this helps. Greetings, P. | | Re: Search for file type takes hours, & finds files on wrong drive Thanks P. I rebuilt the search index as you described. I re-ran the search, it stiil brought up the 7 .pst files in the M: recycle bin. It has been running 20 minutes and found nothing else so far. It hasn't changed it at all. -- chris "P. | | Re: Search for file type takes hours, & finds files on wrong drive So nobody (not even a MVP) can tell me why it takes 3 seconds in XP to find my Outlook .pst file, but Vista takes nearly 3 hours. !!!! ??? I have a screen dump of the results but I don't know where to post it. Please can someone try this search and see if they get the same slow result. -- chris "chrispy" wrote: Quote: > Thanks P. > I rebuilt the search index as you described. | | Re: Search for file type takes hours, & finds files on wrong drive I tried it last night, it took 2 seconds to find the first one, and about 2 minutes to find 3 more... all on the C: drive. I used Ext:.pst in the search box.
