P.S. 98 was a very fast and stable platform for it's time, when I was using it I never, not once, had it crash on me and I ran it from late beta's all the way till XP. If you want crap look at Windows BoB or Windows Me. If you want a Mac then buy one, put some version of windows on it so you can run the programs everyone else has but be happy knowing you paid 3x for the right to say you own a mac
I already own Macs and have never had a single problem with any of them. The only reason anyone is stuck using these p.o.s. windows machines is because so many other people are stuck using MS Office and other "IBM compatible" software. With 10 or 20 more years evolution of the internet, MS will be nothing more than a really bad memory.

Nothing is working for me to eliminate this problem. If I wasn't stuck using MS Office, I would have already ordered a MacBook Air. This Vista o.s. is the worst p.o.s. since Windows 98.
Hi Tim,

If this is opening a TXT file instead, then right click on the REG and click "Open With". Select "Registry Editor". If it is not listed, then manually Browse to "C:\Windows\regedit.exe" and select the regedit.exe file.

See if you can get it to merge for you now.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Sounds to me like your only here to bash windows. We offered suggestions on what you can do, both to fix your issue with Vista and solve your issue with using windows in general. If your only hear to complain I am sure there are other forums out there to use, if not then we will be glad to help solve your issue.

No, I am here to try to fix my 9 month old Vista Ultimate laptop.

I have downloaded and purchased both RegCure and Registry Mechanic, run scans with them and repaired hundreds of errors. I have also tried every single "solution" available on the internet, here and elsewhere, and I continue to get the same result over and over:

If I try to name a new folder or rename an existing folder, I get "The file or folder does not exist."

FWIW, I CAN rename FILES, just not FOLDERS. This is the most annoying problem I have ever had with any computer I have used dating back to the 1980's.

If I cannot fix it this week, I am going back to XP Pro, which I have been running with very few issues on my Intel Mac desktop with Parallels for Mac.

Re: "FILE OR FOLDER DOES NOT EXIST"

Ok then back to the issue. When you download and right-click merge the registry file mentioned above then reboot what happens? Also is Offline files turned on? Might be worth checking in case it did get turned on. Also what hotfixes have you installed on the machine? Another thing to try is see if the problem remains while logged in on a brand new user account.

let us know...

There's your problem. You ran a registry cleaner.

Try this tutorial : Cannot Rename or Move a File or Folder in Vista Fix

Question - Are you a tech wizard that can verify the registry "errors" that where repaired are in fact errors? Those programs are snake oil, and end up creating more problems than they solve.

You only solution would be to have those programs undo the damage they've done (if they provide an undo facility). Otherwise, you'll have to use System Restore to force an undo to a point prior to running "RegCure" and "Registry Mechanic".

If you don't know enough about the registry to fix errors yourself, how can you be sure a "cleaner" is looking in the right places?

Re: "FILE OR FOLDER DOES NOT EXIST"

The good key (see the position of attributes key)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FolderDescriptions\{15CA69B3-30EE-49C1-ACE1-6B5EC372AFB5}]
"Name"="SamplePlaylists"
"Category"=dword:00000003
"RelativePath"="Sample Playlists"
"ParentFolder"="{3214FAB5-9757-4298-BB61-92A9DEAA44FF}"
"LocalizedName"=hex(2):40,00,25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,\
6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,\
00,5c,00,73,00,68,00,65,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,\
2c,00,2d,00,32,00,31,00,38,00,32,00,30,00,00,00
"Attributes"=dword:00000001

The wrong key (see the position of attributes key)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FolderDescriptions.jmg\{15CA69B3-30EE-49C1-ACE1-6B5EC372AFB5}]
"Name"="SamplePlaylists"
"Category"=dword:00000003
"RelativePath"="Sample Playlists"
"ParentFolder"="{3214FAB5-9757-4298-BB61-92A9DEAA44FF}"
"Attributes"=dword:00000001
"LocalizedName"=hex(2):40,00,25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,\
6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,\
00,5c,00,73,00,68,00,65,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,\
2c,00,2d,00,32,00,31,00,38,00,32,00,30,00,00,00

To replace the bad key by the good with RegEdit :

1. rename bad key "
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FolderDescriptions\{15CA69B3-30EE-49C1-ACE1-6B5EC372AFB5}]
" with another name.
2. import good key (see up)
3. Reboot

I search this solution since many months on the web without no other
solution!! And now it’s good for me …

Bonne chance !
