| | File type icons In XP I was able to change the icon the system would use for a file type. I have installed a text editor and would like to use it's icon. But Vista keeps using the ugly notepad icon. Can this icon be changed in Vista? DCC |

| | Re: File type icons Using Windows Explorer, find the file you want to edit and right-click on it and select Open With-->Choose Default Program. You should be able to select your text editor there. -Reed Rinn MVP Shell / User "DCC" <doug@collina.net> wrote in message news:885B5965-2F4B-47F1-A072-7D74D1DEBBDC@microsoft.com... > In XP I was able to change the icon the system would use for a file type. > > I have installed a text editor and would like to use it's icon. | | Re: File type icons I can get the new text editor to be the default program, but it uses the notepad icon still. In XP I was able to associat other icons with file types such as .txt. Can this not be done in Vista? |

| | Re: File type icons I think it works the same as in XP. Right-click the program's shortcut icon and choose Properties. On the Shortcut tab of the Properties sheet click Change Icon. I can't speak to the actual icon for the text editor. That has nothing to do with Vista and how that works is up to whoever created that text editor.
