I selected "pictures" as the type of folder, but there is no 'filmstrip" or
"slideshow" view in Windows Explorer. Where did it go, and is there a
substitute for it?

Windows Explorer has a Preview pane that can be opened, which can show the
contents of certain file types, and play movies.
The slideshow feature has been moved to Windows Photo Gallery.
