Hard drive woes

Today my HP dv2517 laptop (Vista home premium) tries to check the disk on
every boot-up. The check seems to run for a second or two and then hang (no
disk access light). I can bypass this sometimes, but its a major hassle.

Once booted, the error log shows that there has been one error - NTFS
corrupt and unusable. I cannot run chkdsk in the command prompt 'cos I am
only a user with admin privs. I suppose I need to activate the real REAL
admin account, but I'm not sure how to do this.

Quality advice gratefully received.

Steve.
