    Flight Simulator 2004

    Summary
OS - Windows Vista Home Basic
    RAM - DDR2 @ 1GB
    Video Memory 256MB

I have just installed and i have noticed that it is very slow on running,
thus it makes it very hard to play. I have tried compatibility mode and this
does not help. Update 9.1 has been installed.

All other games like empire earth and Need for speed 3 run fine.

    Any ideas please

Need more important info. FS 2004 should run pretty good on a modern
    system.

    - Processor?
is the most important as the FS engine is doing much calculating. You can't
    be a 'frame rate junkie'
with Flight Sim. Around 20 should give reasonably smooth flight. <shift>
<z> a couple of times will display the frame rate. I leave it off. Where
are the sliders set? Maybe move some back a bit.

    -Video card?
if you don't have a good one turn of AA. Cloud slider down, etc.

Flight Sim is not your typical game. It is doing a ton of stuff figuring
out where the heck it is. It doesn't offload a lot of stuff to the video
card but you should have a good one.

Maybe a video card would help. I did a quick check on the L1040 and it
looks like it uses Shared Memory - up to 256mb.

Hopefully some other comments will come. I'm not sure if your machine can
run FS 2004 even with a better video card.

A Celeron 1.6Ghz? While for a 2004 Flight Sim this should be adiquate to
run, it might not be optimal. Lower your video settings in game.

Does the game seem to "stutter" that is you're flying along and the
simulation with stop or stutter periodically?

One thing I hate about Vista Home Basic, only supports 1Gig of RAM, Last
week I started telling my customers that if they were gamers I would not
guarantee their experience with any game under Vista running less than 2Gigs
of RAM. Vista runs good in 1Gig, but games that use a lot of ram like your
MMOs (except WoW) or large RPGs like Oblivion, or I suppose even flight sims
like FSX, Windows just has issues handling ram, it's a Windows NT kernal
    thing.

Not saying you need to upgrade, but it probably wouldn't hurt.

    Andy,

I must, in a small sense, disagree with your assumption of a 1GB limit as I
have 1x1GB and 1x512MB installed on my system and Windows Vista Home Basic
    detects both of these.

With regards to FSX I have noticed a similar but more severe slowness
    compared to Flight simulator 2004.

With regards to Flight Simulator 2004, I have exactly the same setup with
exception to the graphics card which is an ATI based card and memory which
is only 512 and it runs fine on it. The reason I want to get Flight
Simulator 2004 running on the desktop is so that I can use the laptop for
other things. The OS is the same.>

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 - System Information Update Full

Your video card is to blame. While it may do simple 3D graphic
acceleration, it is way to slow to run pretty much any modern game,
including FS2004. If you upgrade that (even to a cheap PCI Express ATI
or NVIDIA card), you should get a very noticeable increase in
performance, even with the slower Celeron CPU.

Re: Flight Simulator 2004 - System Information Update Full

Why then can i run it on my Laptop with only half the memory that my desktop
has, It has an ATI Express that has a maximum, at the moment of 128mb and a
total memory of around 500mb. They bot are running vista as well

Why is it that I should have to upgrade my graphics card, I can run Empire
Earth on my desktop and it tends to take more memory that what FS 2004 does.
I have installed one of the patches that seems to improve the play of FS
    2004 by about 10%.

    Any comments welcome......

I have also noticed that my display is strange when I play FS 2004, I
appears to be normal but slow when I disable the transform lighting option
and when I turn it on it runs at normal speed but it looks like a disco show
and can make it hard to play the game.
