Vista - Games won't open

My 3 year old was playing "Purble Place" and accidentally opened several
windows and had quite a few things up on the screen. We don't have an
internet connection yet, so there isn't a risk of viruses, etc. But, ever
since this happened only "Ink Ball" will open. The other games appear to
still be on the computer (icons, info regarding them, etc) but nothing will
open to play. Any tips on how to play these pre-installed games again?

of windows and unless something weird happens or you overload the system a
bit, everything should work. If your games have stopped working there could
be something wrong with them.

Might try going into Windows Features, remove the games then install them
again.

Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off >
Unselect "Games" (Uncheck) > press OK > go back into Turn Windows features
on or off > Select Games (Check), and press OK.

Try the games again, see if that helps. If not, update your video/audio card
drivers, respond here with your computer make and model.

After several months of not updating Vista (a practice I now hardily
recommend), I decided to let Windows Update do its thing. The following
has resulted:

1. The Windows Experience rating would not update. I fixed this by
doing the update through a C:\ prompt. It failed originally due to an
"XML" error. I then updated my XML and got the rating to work. But
only through the C:\ prompt.

2. My Windows "Help" has vanished. As has the ability to run .hlp
files. Attempted the usual fixes listed on microsoft.com, nothing
helped.

3. Finally and most disastrously, all my Microsoft Games won't open,
with the single exception of "Inkball." Why I don't know. I installed
and reinstalled the games about a million times. I copied the files
from another Vista Computer on my Home LAN, nothin', except Inkball.
The "Games" folder flashes (long enough for you to see it's empty) then
nothing except the Vista Blue Donut of Death spinning endlessly.
Selecting the .exe of any game has the same effect.

I even went so far as to update Vista to SP1. The only thing I can say
for certain about SP1 is that it was, without a doubt, the biggest waste
of two hours I have spent in a long time. It's doing nothing other than
sucking up more electrons. Didn't help my lack o' Games problem.

Anybody?

We had a friend over to the house this weekend and he checked out our game
problem for us. He ended up doing a system restore back to the date this
incident happened. It appears this sovled our issues.

First things I did to resolve this was System Restore and a Video
Driver rollback and reinstall.

Nothing has worked.

So, if some Wiseguy at Microsoft could figure out what "Inkball" has
that the other games don't, they could figure this out. (The interface
of Inkball seems completely different than that of the other games.)

And I wouldn't have to do a reinstall of Vista, which I know it the
next step. Of course, since I'm dual booting with XP, I could just
play over there.

For the Microsoft guy, I'm on an Acer L310, Intel e4300, 2GB ram, Intel
946GZ chipset.

Internet is not the only way which you can get virus!
The game itself which you install might have a virus!

Open start Menu
Type in "System Restore"

Bring up this program, it lets you roll back your system several days.
It won't effect your data files, just your programs, it could be
something you installed is causing problems with your system.

You may have to roll back a week or so, basically run the program, roll
back a week or so, then try the game again once the program finishes.

If it still doesn't work try rolling again, but don't do it too much.
Maybe no more than 1 month.

If that doesn't help, let us know.

If you never had your computer on the Internet, did you upgrade the
computer? Did you buy the computer open box? What make/model is your
computer?

I don't deny that a Microsoft published application could contain
something malicious, even if accidental. Considering the complexity of
rootkits and programs in general, it's more likely now, but it's still
really rare for an authentic CD/DVD pressed by the manufacturer to
contain a virus. Now I'm not sure what area of the country/world you
live in, and it could be piracy is higher in your area, in which case I
agree if you have a pirated copy of a piece of software the chances of
that disc being infected with something jumps exponentially.

So while I don't disagree with you, I frown upon anyone who uses fear as
a method of prevention. Try education, and please try to state every
side of the facts to support your accusations.

what's a "ravmon trojan!" Which published Macintosh DVD has a trojan?
Give program, version, pressing (little number printed on the ring of
the disc). I'd like to check this out for myself.

DVDs are pressed like records, you make a master disc and press all the
discs from that master. It's not like a consumer DVD burner. I find it
highly unlikely that a pressed DVD had random trojans, like a different
one on every disc. If you mean a different trojan on more than one dvd
product, that's even more suspect that you're just trying to argue for
the sake of argueing.

Feel free to follow-up and site some examples. I know of 2 CDs that have
weird stuff on them, nothing harmful, but obivously screw-ups on the
developers end.

Oh, and lets keep this Civil, Mr. THINK.
