Did you have any success on the Thief III forum that Andy pointed you to in reply to your last post?? Does this happen when you try to install the game, or to play it? Your posts are ambiguous.... |

DX10 files, just adds a file that is missing that some older games need. If that doesn't work then maybe you need to install C++ runtime files. I have Thief3 but don't have it installed. Maybe I will install it later and see if I get the same error. |

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83627 The thread here is a website dedicated to Looking Glass games like Thief series, and System Shock. More than likely the suggestions here will fix whatever problem you may be experiencing. Thief came out long before Vista so there are bound to be problems. Try some of the suggestions on this site for Thief 3 and Vista, respond to this thread if nothing helps, and explain what you tried to get the game to work so we don't offer repeat advice. Good luck, A. -- -A. |

Andy, Have tried several suggestions. a couple of them seem like
suggestions that my IT department at work gives when they don't know the answer to anything. such as trying to install direct x 9 over DX10 that just seems like your begging for trouble there. this is a brand new system I'm not mucking about with untested theories. Andy [YaYa] wrote:

Installing DirectX 9 in Vista is safe, it just updates DirectX 9 and earlier files, it won't touch DirectX 10 stuff. Nice thing about DirectX, is it's well tested. You can install DirectX 3 (The first DirectX with an installer) onto Vista and it won't effect your DirectX 10.1 installation files. Just don't try to delete DirectX from your HD. You CAN, sorta in Windows 2k or Pre-XP OSs, but XP and Vista come with DirectX, simply removing the Dx*.dll files would be bad. Trust me, DirectX has been tested. You really can't mess it up. The problem is not with DirectX, it may be something else is causing problems for DirectX, but the DirectX system is pretty much install and go. No one would use it if it wasn't any good, OpenGL could of easily taken up the slack if DirectX failed, but it didn't and here we are. I think the problem is people think DirectX is something it isn't, all DirectX does is lets game developers create games using one language, then DirectX translates that unversal language into something your video card and audio card (of which every one is different) can understand. If your video or audio card drivers are stupid or some other program on your computer is trying to do something it's not supposed to, then you might get a crash or whatever, but this problem is not DirectX related. If you installed DirectX via the DXWEBSETUP.EXE program, you have EVERY version of DirectX on your system that's currently supported. Dude, I work in IT (part time), Were all a bunch of retards when it comes to game compatibility. Talk to someone who works tech support or customer support in Video Games (I used too). Look in the Thief 3 manual, see if their tech support phone number still works. I know the old Maxis games (Like SimAnt, or SimCity 2000), you can call the OLD Maxis Walnut Creek office phone numbers and they will redirect you to the new EA Support lines in Redwood City. There are people on the forum I linked earlier that have answers to your problem, if you post there you'll get a response from people who live on Thief. If you're really desperate, let me know, i'll see if I can find a copy of the game to test. -- -A. |
