Many games that played fantastically well on XP won't play at all on Vista,
at least not without the proper extensions that not all games have
available. You'll have to find the extensions for those games yourself and
they may be third party, shareware or freeware, but they could be out there.
I was able to load all of my Tomb Raider games onto Vista thanks to Vista
extensions made by fan programmers, but for anything you need you'll have to
find them individually. Maybe the game manufacturer has made their own
available? Good luck.

I didn't have any problems installing Doom3. Have you tried running the setup with run as admin.

Mine had problems. It would not boot. No window. Nothing. Wouldn't even
load. But the extensions available through www.tombraiders.com work
marvelously well. They were made just for this.

Hmm, maybe the matter in video drivers? Here is ATI HD3470 (with Catalyst drivers).

I just installed TR3, and TR4 to check. No problems whatsoever. Strange.
