FSX and Low Virtual Memory

I am running Vista 32bit with 4gigs of ram, AMD Phenom 9950, just put in
an ATI 4870X2 with 8.11 drivers.

I have two hard drives, one 250gb with the OS and FS9 and FSX on it and
another 500gb with really nothing on it.

I have my virtual memory set up as follows:
C: and D: drive set to system managed. Should I set the custom size
and to what intial and max size???

Total paging file size for all drives:
Min: 16mb
Recommended:4605mb
Currently allocated 6740mb

Im leaning towards the 4870x2 card the cause of the memory leak not
sure if it is a driver issue, might install the 5.8 version and see what
happens. Also, plan on moving FS9 and FSX to the bigger drive. Will
this help??

Thanks for any advise and I know this thread is out there many times,
but they are all old, so I wanted to start a new one.

Thanks again
Brett

Re: FSX and Low Virtual Memory

Think I found my answer......upgrade to vista 64bit version. 32bit can
not handle anything more the 4gb of RAM......does this sound right???

Re: FSX and Low Virtual Memory

Thats right vista32 can only handle 4gb of memory (this includes ram, video
cards, and other system devices). So your recent upgrade to a 4870X2 with
2Gb of video memory means your operating system can only make use of
somewhere under 2GB of ram (depending on what other hardware you have
installed). Upgrading to Vista 64 will allow you to use all 4gb of ram (or
more if you have it) as well as a big video card.

Re: FSX and Low Virtual Memory

Thanks for your reply. My system is very very stable and from what I
have researched, the new drivers for the 64bit version has improved that
OS quite abit. So.....it an upgrade for me. Thanks again.

You could just ignore the problem if you want, honestly with 4 gigs of ram
you shouldn't have to hit the HD too often for virtual memory.

Drop the D: drive from your virtual memory settings, no reason to use 2
drives. Leave the size settings to automatic. Assuming you're running NTFS
file system there shouldn't be any issue running Vista 32 bit with that
setup.

In actuality Vista will only utilize about 3.5 gigs ram, but you probably
won't notice the difference between Vista 32 and Vista 64

Either way, upgrade to 64-bit, or don't.

Re: FSX and Low Virtual Memory

Thanks for your reply. Actually Vista 32 was the problem. With the
4gigs of ram and 2 on my card, vista could not handle the card, so that
was the reason for the low virtual memory with FSX running. Upgraded to
64 and problem solved. All ram accessed now and improvement noted.
Thanks again!!
