If you poke around a bit in the Microsoft Vista support sites, you will find
an update that installs DX 9. (c) on Vista.
Hopefully, this will solve your problem.
Don't feel too bad, I just went through an OpenGL issue with XP and Nvidia
drivers that was similar. I ended up installing part of Nvidia's
development/monitoring software, which seems to have fixed some registry
entries, then the latest updated drivers. That cured the problem. (The last
Nvidia driver updates for vista resulted in a slight speed increase on my HP
Laptop as well.
