Vista - Is there ANY game that will play?

Is there ANY game that will play?

I've been trying to load some games - Quake II, Half-Life, Hexen, Heretic...
all those that work fine in 98SE and XP. So far, the only game my Vista Home
Premium will play is a joke on me for thinking I was upgrading!

Out of 19 different programs that ran in XP, only one installed on Vista.
All the rest, after all the 'are you sure' and 'need your permission' popups,
I get anotehr popup that Windoze wants to check with Microsoft to see if
there is a 'solution'.

Does MS intend to fix Vista soon? And would it be quicker if I can see if I
can get my XP machine back from the recycler and use that until the fixes,
patches to the fixes and fixes for the patches and patched patches are out?

Vista won't let me set up a wireless, a printer (tried 3!), network with
other computers that use 98SE, or set up scanners, camera, any 98/XP games
(solitaire works -- woo-woo!) nor can I get rid of all the 'are you sure' and
'need your permission', and other useless popus from Windoze.

No wonder the specs to run Vista are so high - it needs all the dual
processors and ram to cope with the popups!

I started out on a IBM 8 bit XT long before there was colour, and DOS 1.2
and upgraded constantly and, have been duped yet again. Should have kept my
XP machines.

VERY disappointed - again. Bill - get DOS right before you make another OS,
and maybe call the next one Boondoggle!

Re: Is there ANY game that will play?

You're kidding. I buy a new computer and all this new technology and fancy OS
and I am limited to 1/87th as to what programs, hardware and entertainment I
can put on this miserable excuse for an OS!

That list in the link SHOULD be on every computer that has Vista before the
computer gets past the till - as a WARNING to consumers to hang on to their
working cpomputer befoer investing any money in Vista that does nothing but
drain the bank account - faster mind yoium but drain it non-the-less.

Re: Is there ANY game that will play?

Ar the main games you play as old as Quake2 and HL ?

I most play all the new games, But I can play CS 1.6, though it's the steam.
version. I can also play Warcraft 3, which is a 1999 game.

Did you try running those games in XP Compat mode ? I don't play many games
that was made before 2000. The ones made after work pretty good. Sorry can't
offer you more help, but a game that's 10 year old, may not be compatibile

Re: Is there ANY game that will play?

No issues with my software here, even the original Command and Conquer 95
works.

I notice at least three of the games you mention can use OpenGL, have you
tried installing the latest video drivers?

"That list in the link SHOULD be on every computer..."
Not really.
That is not an official list and there is no official list.
It is not an all inclusive list.
That site has nothing to do with Microsoft.
You certainly can not hold Microsoft or anyone else responsible for any
errors or omissions that may be on that list.

Part of the necessary research someone should do while considering an
operating system upgrade is verify your essential hardware and software
works with the appropriate manufacturer.

Re: Is there ANY game that will play?

I was able to find my old Quake 2 CD and installed it (under Vista64 no
less) and it ran. I forgot that it came up in 320x200 windows mode, but I
was able to get it to full screen.

Anyone remember how to turn mouselook on ? Man that game is ugly, I remember
when I got my PowerVR card and thought life couldn't get any better.

RE: Is there ANY game that will play?

biggest help I've found so far is telling the installer and the game itself
to run in administrator mode, even if your user account has admin privileges.
the other fix is to give all users full access to the directory that the
game is installed in, as many older games write to the program directory,
which is disallowed by default in vista.
