Counterstrike Error

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this, but i'm confused as hell by
the actual CS tech sites... every time i start steam to play CS i get an
error message.

Steam.exe (main exception): unable to load library Steam.dll

i'm not sure if this is a windows vista problem, or a CS problem... any help
would be appreciated, in plain english haha, i'm not too swift with
computers, i just know enough to get by... thanks

Re: Counterstrike Error

No problem posting here, though that's a specific app problem. I remember
seeing a sticky note in the steam forums that talked about what to do, if
you were getting the Steam.dll error message.

Here is the fix from Valve
http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-...i=&p_topview=1

the program, changed my firewall settings, disabled my firewall... nothing
seems to be working... my computer says that i am logged on as an admin
account but for some reason i don't really thing i have admin privs to all my
apps, could that have something to do with it? how can i find out if i have
those privs to apps???

Re: Counterstrike Error

Vista is not like XP or Win2k, in that a Admin isn't the full admin, but
that you have the right to "run as administrator". The true admin account is
disabled by default. Also, certain program folders are set to read-only and
the UAC unlocks those folders when you access them via the UAC.

Did you turn off the UAC by chance ? Do you have nay other gaming apps that
work fine or is CS the only one you're trying ?

Re: Counterstrike Error

Well, I just got this computer, and it's my first encounter with vista. I
don't even know what UAC is to be honest, so it's possible that i turned it
off... although i donno if i did.

also, counter-strike is the only game i actually own at the moment, i moved
and still don't have my other apps and games with me, i went out and bought
cs when i got the pc... so it's the only game i've been able to try, maybe
this UAC thing is the answer if you could help with that?

Re: Counterstrike Error

If you don't know what the UAC is (User Account Control) then odds are you
didn't turn it off. It can be found in Control panel-User accounts and there
is a option to turn off\On UAC.

I'd suggest un-installing STEAM, going to the folder where STEAM is
installed and delete that folder. run a disk defrag, and when you
re-install, re-install to a different folder path. I think the default is
something like c:\program files\steam. You might try putting it on C:\steam
or if you have a different hard dirve, install it there.

Obviously, it may be a little time consuming downloading all the content
again, but when all the easy fixes don't work, then you have to do the hard
painful ones

Re: Counterstrike Error

Arg... I did what you suggested and it still won't work... This thing is
blowing my mind... You were right though, UAC was still turned on, hadn't
deactivated it...

i'm almost begining to think this is a lost cause...

Re: Counterstrike Error

At this point you're probably be best served by posting over in the
Valve\Steam forums and getting people who've worked with this problem alot
to give you some help. Be sure to list your system specs and what've you've
tried and what the result were
