Vista - Vista and online Gaming

I'm having too many problems with the Online games I play to continue
with Vista. Most of my issues are caused by the Nvidia Drivers. I really
doubt that in any other aspect of retailing would a manufacturer get
away with such blatant false claims as was made with the 8800 graphics
card. It certainly was *not* Vista ready and still isn't. I wish I could
get the local trading standards organization interested.

I understand from the comments here and other sources that its not just
the 8800 card that was not vista ready, other card Nvidia owners are
reporting similar issues.

How can Microsoft certify a driver that plainly does not work with so
much 3rd party software?

I've gone back to Windows XP and like many organizations, I'll wait for
Vista SP1 before I come back to it.

I have used the 6600GT, 6600GS and 7600GS on vista stsems and had no
problems whatso ever..

Certification doesn't mean that the driver will do what it's supposed to
do. It merely means Microsoft doesn't think the driver will crash your
system.

You just have to play the right games. I hear Tiger Woods 2007, I have a
6800GT and overall it seems fine with most games, but Doom3 seems to
sometimes show a little corruption in some textures, but I'm not sure if
that's the drivers or not.

Well, I understand your frustration, though to put things in perspective,
Vista as only be out for general consumption for 2 months, So being an early
adopter, you got some of the early bugs. You probably don't have to wait for
SP1, but probably about 4-6 months.

There was a lad who started a lawsuit against nVidia because the 8800 series
was labeled Vista ready and technically it wasn't due to poor drivers at the
moment. The other cards, might be labeled vista capable, but are not
consider Vista ready cards.

To be a little fair to Microsoft, nVidia can have a WHQL certified driver,
but that doesn't mean it works 100% perfect. Plus it's important to note
that Microsoft role in the drivers is that they provide minimal
functionality and in Vista's case, must work with Aero. Now there is a
separate DX10 certification criteria from my understanding that is outside
of the generic windows certification.

Either way, As it's been said many times, if you were happy with XP, there
you should have stayed with XP or dual booted to vista. Once the DX10 games
hit the shelf, that's when upgrading to vista would have made more sense. I
bet you want be one of the first people to install Vienna, if it actually
comes out in 2009

do you really think that microsoft is going to test every video card against every game on the market for the past 20-30 years.
at some point it is the responsibility of the game makers to make an effort to upgrade their products. vista has been 5 years in development.

microsoft simply blesses the drivers as not likely to crash the system.

have you tried compatibility modes.

It's not the video card. It's the Vista TCP/IP stack. It's more robust, but
end up being bloated which causes serious lagging for FPS games. I've been
asking around in the online FPS community, and this is everyone's concensus.
We can either wait for SP1 or go back to XP. I'm seriously thinking of
installing XP. I go online and in chat mode, I'd say I'm running Vista, and
some people commiserate with me, others scoff. Vista is not ready for online
FPS gaming.
