Vista - Vista 64 and XP perfect solution :)

Hi i have just built a new system around a E6400 cpu with a 7600GT(waiting
for 8800 to come down) 2gig Ram etc, installed Vista 64 on a sata drive and
runs like a dream also put Xp on a spare Ide drive. If programs dont run
satisfactory on Vista i just boot into XP and run it that way!, well worth
doing if your not happy with general gae performance and Nvidia Vista
drivers of late ,happy gaming

I would absolutely agree. If you're going to early adopt an OS, dual booting
is the only way to go. There's nothing like the "When all else fail, I can
go back to XP" safety net

Hi Folks,

This is a great solution for gaming but not the solution I use. I am running
Company of Heros on my Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I have dual SATA drives and 4
GB of RAM but only a 1.86 core 2 duo and Nvdia Quadro NVS 285. COH runs
nicely.

The issue for me is running Line of business apps and for that I am using
Virtual PC 2007 with an XP Pro installed. This is a completely free solution
since you can run XP using downgrade rights and VPC allows you to run one
copy of the host OS for free. Other advantages are that you can share
clipboards between Vista 64 and XP and drag and drop to the desktop. Of
course this also prevents a reboot of the box to switch OS. I hope this helps
for any of the non-gamers out there.

Jeff, can you help me to use VPC, I downloaded it and installed it, but when
I want to install xp, I put in the disk then it says setup is checking your
computers configuration, then the screen goes blue it says Windows setup at
the top and has a grey bar at the bottom and then stops there. I am running
windows vista ultimate and am trying to install xp home, do know what to do
or know anyone that might know? thanks tobyb121

Toby,

I am not realy sure where you went wrong. If you have the XP Home software
in the CD Drive you may have kicked off the installer through the autorun
feature of the CD. Just exit out of this install because it is trying to
install over the VISTA Ultimate.

Once VPC is installed start the VPC console application from the start menu.
That will kick off the VPC Wizard. With the XP Home CD in the drive run
through the wizard steps to create a VPC. If you are still having problems

Thanks Jeff but I found on the VPC website that you need 512mb to run vista,
plus an aditional 128 to run xp with vpc on vista, but I only have 512mb of
ram so that looks to have been causing the problem.

Agreed, I use removable SATA drives which make keeping a clone practical
just in case of damage, the slides are not that expensive and so for anyone
planning to build their own machine I think it's an option that should be
considered. I've come to the conclusion that for testing different
combinations of things it is the only way to go. Not great with the XP /
Vista combination to put all your OS together unless you have some fallback
options.
