    hiccup in networked games

When I play games online or on LAN, my game freezes and unfreeze randomly.
single player works great, but online game cause the game to hiccup.

I'm using a WUSB54GC which is not supported for 64bit yet (probably never,
since linksys = lazy) but am using ralink's (same chipset) 64bit chipset. it
works great outside of gaming enviornment. I can download massive files in a
snap (800 kbps or so) but as soon as I play online games things fall apart.

Is there anyway I can find out whats causing the hiccup? I tried
preformance monitor, but it's all moonspeak to me. if all else fails I'm
going 32 bit vista... and if that doesn't work.. back to xp. everything used
to work great in xp. sigh..

    Re: hiccup in networked games

It certainly sounds like you may have a driver/hardware issue there. You
are probably even having the issue when not in games but it is not
noticeable since your system is not being stressed as much as when it is
    playing games.

There may be other better ways to test but this is what I can recommend off
    the top of my head:

    A. You disable (or better yet, uninstall and remove) the network card you
suspect is to blame and install one that is fully supported. This is
    probably the easiest method.

    B. Format and install a 32bit version of Vista. I know this is a pain but
it sounds like you may have been preparing yourself to do this at some point
anyway. If this does not correct the issue then you could go back to XP.

    C. If you have access to another computer that runs the 64bit version of
Vista you could take the network card from your system and install it in
that computer and see if you get similar results.

I hope this helps. I know how annoying problems like this can be.

I really don't want to have to buy xp since I just got vista but I guess we
have to do what we have to do.

Sounds really simple, but have you checked Windows Update for new Linksys drivers? I had to use the Ralink ones until I got online and Windows Update detected newer Linksys drivers for my card. (Now, that's the definition of irooonnnyy)

I did actually. one of the first things that got installed after installing
vista. whats real strange is the stupid driver was made sometime in march or
something like that. why won't linksys have it available on their site?

I reformatted and installed vista 32-bit and loaded up the official drivers.
no go, still jerky gameplay. I switched to my brothers linksys usb adapter.
    still no use.
I went out and bought a belkin usb adapter (stupid me, it's also ralink
adapter, which I didn't know at the time). this one does the same thing.
    jerky gameplay.

typing jerky network gameplay netted me whole one post that contains the
same problem as me. I'm thinking it's not the network. maybe something to
    do with usb?
    hmmm.

My two cents is that I don't like USB wireless adapters for network game
play. I have 1 friend who's had good success with a linksys (802.11b model)
and two that replaced the USB one with a PCI model, because of flaky
    performance over the network.

You might try setting you're wireless USB device to only run at 802.11B
(11mb) versus the full speed ahead 54mb/s

this usb dongle worked just fine before, so I'm going to try to eliminate
some variables. probably try your suggestion with going B. if that fails,
    I'm going windows XP
if that fails atleast I'll know it's not the OS.
my mobo/cpu is the only thing else that could be the problem.
If all else fails, I'll have to send some quests to evga see what they
think. probably go out and buy my self a internal wifi adapter too.

I am getting the same issue wtih VIsta and i know it is the OS as i
have dual boot to windows xp and it works great. In games my network
puases for 5 seconds every minute to 2. I have tried the anti - lag
utility but still does not fix the issue. I am used the 32 bit
version of vista with the latest drivers for my PCI wireless G linksys
card (no idea on the model) v 4.1 and the drivers are listed as the
vista driver by linksys with no newer ones from microsoft. Do not
feel alone! I do think it is a linksys issue or driver issue as my
laptop with a intel card on vista works great for gaming.

my netgear was having problems as well. driver or how vista handles some of
these network cards.. hmm. I did find out more info on whats going on using
    Counter-strike source network graph.
every lag, my packetloss goes up to 34%. it's horrible.
