Vista - Microsoft Train Sim

Does anyone know how to get Microsoft's Train Simulator to run on Vista? It
worked for a couple of years just fine on XP, but now I'm running Vista Home
Premium. It seems to install OK, and runs after I set it to run in XP
compatible mode, and admin mode, but it won't shut down properly. Also the
update won't install.

I looked for the MS web site, but all that's there is an announcement that
there's a completely new Train Sim coming - no doubt at a completely new
price. If anyone has struck this and working anything out I would be really
grateful (so would my grandson)

I've seen this running on Windows Vista, is it just the updater and closing
it you're having problems with? Make sure the updater is also running with
administrative rights. What's happening when you try and close it?

Thank you. I really should have thought to run the updates in Admin mode -
silly me. They installed OK, but I am still left with a black screen when I
exit Trainsim. Well, there's still a thin frame around the window if you
know what I mean, and I can roll it over in the Vista app switcher - that
cute 3D effect. In fact that's what I have to do to get the task bar back.
The only way I seem to be able to close it is to use the task manager and
force the issue. My display adapter is shown in the Device Manager as a
Radeon X1300 by ATI Technologies. The hardware is the same as I was using
until recently for XP Pro and Trainsim ran beautifully on that. The only
thing that has changed is the OS. Thank you.

Have you tried running it without admin rights and in compatibility mode.
MVP Katy Pluta informs me that neither should be necessary.

Which video drivers version are you using? Is there an error message
in the OS event log?

As Paul said I do not experience this problem with an ATI 1900XT and
the 7.4 drivers...

I have a Radeon X1300 ATI graphics card with 256 Mbytes. Going to the
manufacturer's site last night I see that they are very scathing of the
drivers built in to Vista for it. A week ago there was nothing but the Vista
ones available, but since then they have put up their own Vista drivers on
the web site. I have downloaded and installed them, and things are looking
heaps better. Not perfect yet, but better. I think it is a beta, and I
anticipate an update very soon. I have actually uninstalled Trainsim, but
will reinstall it shortly and try again. In the meantime Celestia, which was
pretty hopeless with the Vista built in drivers, is running much better, so
I have high hopes. I'll post back with the results for Trainsim soon.

Well, further to the previous post, I installed the new Radeon card drivers,
and then reinstalled Trainsim while logged in as an admin. I then set it to
run in XP compatible mode and tried again. It's running a lot smoother, but
it still leaves me with a black screen at close and I have to use the good
ol' three finger salute to get it completely shut down - sigh. I'll keep
fiddling when I get some more time and report back any breakthroughs.
