Vista - MP3

My children are wanting to purchase an MP3 and I don't know a lot about
them. I am getting conflicting information about which MP3 players work
well with Vista. Are downloads required to get it running or does Vista
recognize the MP3? Thx L

Got my lad a Sony MP3 player and just plugged it into my Vista machine and
it just picked up without need for any drivers at all

I have an ipod and the software for it (itunes) works just fine with Vista.
I really like the itunes interface and use it instead of Windows Media
Player for my music.

You shouldn't have any problems, Vista will automatically search for and
install a suitable driver for your device. You can also visit the
manufacturers website for most Mp3 players and download the driver for the
version of windows you are using.

So is the question, "My kids want to download/purchase music MP3s, how do I
do this?" or are you asking, "What MP3 Players work in Vista?"

MP3 is a music file format. MP3 players are little walkmans that you can
download MP3 files into and playback when your walking around or jogging or
whatever.

If you want to know how to buy MP3s online, Open Windows Media Player, click
on the Urge tab at the top, follow the prompts to locate a song you'd like
to buy, fork over a credit card number and once the transation is complete
you can listen to the song.

If you want to take the music with you in a portable form, you can get just
about any MP3 player, connect the player to your computer, copy the song
file to the player and take it with you.

HOWEVER if your kids are begging for an iPod (likely)... If you want to get
an iPod you HAVE TO use iTunes.

Download iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes
Open the file to Install, then run iTunes
If you want, you can buy songs from the iTunes music store and download
them, note that you can't take songs from iTunes and put them into Windows
Media Player and visa versa.
Once you have your iPod (Prices range from $79 for the iPod Shuffle up to
$299 (I think) for the 80Gb Video iPod) plug it into your computer, and any
songs you have in iTunes will get copied to the player, almost
automatically.

Some things to remember, password protect your iTunes Store account, if your
kids know your password they can login and make music purchases whenever,
but I believe you need to enter your credit card number with each purchase,
so you might be ok there.

Also if you put a CD into your computer iTunes will make MP3 files and copy
them into your iTunes library, look for the Import CD button in the lower
right corner.

That was the long answer, the short answer is, just about any MP3 player
will work in Vista.
