| | Quake 4 - not working Hey, I have a Vaio VGN-AR31S laptop and try as I might, I CANNOT get Quake 4 to work on it despite many of my friends having no problems. I managed after many attempts to get the game to load, and even managed to connect to a server but only by accessing the console as my mouse wont work within the game at all. I've tried 3 different mice now - and despite being able to get into the game, I stare at my feet, spin on the spot and then when I'm VERY bored, I can somehow manage to use the mouse to shoot a couple of my toes off...but thats it. Firstly, I've been unable to download updated drivers from Nvidia as when I tried to install it kept telling me I didnt have 32 bit. So I eventually found a site where they gave you a modified file which when added to the dowload of the new driver made it install. However, having done this - now the game wont load at all, let alone get me to a point where I can do my on the spot spinning due to no mouse function. I have no idea if its the graphics driver causing the problem as everything else seems to be working properly apart from the mouse? Well at least it did before the updated driver! Graphics driver is a GE Force Go 7600 GT, driver version (at the moment - though I'll prob roll back) is 165.01 I'm about to go o a rather boring holiday with my Dad and WITHOUT my Quake!!!!!!! Please help me! |

First problem, Sony doesn't list a Vaio VGN-AR31S on their website, was going to see which version of Vista you have on your computer. I SUSPECT you have the 64-bit version. Uncommon with commercial computers, but not unheard of. >> Firstly, I've been unable to download updated drivers from Nvidia as when >> I >> tried to install it kept telling me I didnt have 32 bit. So I eventually >> found a site where they gave you a modified file which when added to the >> dowload of the new driver made it install. If nVidia says you don't have 32 bit, you migth need the 64bit. If you installed the 32 bit drivers that might be why Quake no longer runs. What was this "site" you found? I mean if you have a driver that's not designed for your OS then you shouldn't install it. >> Graphics driver is a GE Force Go 7600 GT, driver version (at the moment - >> though I'll prob roll back) is 165.01 Well you may not need to rollback you should just make sure you're not running Vista 64-bit. Bring up Start menu, type "System" and select the icon that just says "System". In the System section of this window it will say either: System Type: 32-bit Operating System or System Type: 64-bit Operating System if you have 64-bit, go to nVidia.com, and get the 64-bit Vista Drivers for your Geforce Go 7600GT. That'll get the game running again. NOW, your mouse problem. In Quake, go into your options menu for mouse/keyboard control, select "Default" settings, or reset, or whatever. Sounds like your system settings just got borked. You were right in the first place, if the game runs it's not your video driver. Your mouse is not working, your mouse is the problem, or the game's ability to correctly recognize the mouse controls. Good luck, A. |

| | Re: Quake 4 - not working Andy, thanks so much for the reply! I did what you said - I DEF have 32 bit, though I did try to download the 64bit drivers just in case it worked, and I got the same error message. So...i rolled back and now have the original drivers. I then uninstalled Quake and the 1.3 update and deleted everything I could find that was left behind and reinstalled the lot. And guess wot!!! It worked!! For about 5 mins...grrrrrrrr Well, to be fair it worked until I exited Quake and then when I tried to relaunch the next time I wanted to play...the thing loads up fine, but the mouse WILL NOT work on it. If I open console...then no problem, but as soon as I exit...nothing. My G7 works in Quake on my Alien...but just not on here. HT eonly difference between the two machines is obv I have a better graphics card on Alien...and Vista. Alien runs on XP. But the mouse works on lappy+Vista out of Quake - tho from time to time it does stop and disappears. Ive emailed logitech to see if they can help as well. But I am now on holiday - and its cloudy - and I'm with my Dad and his friends - and I have no quake!!! <g> Missy "Andy [Ex-MSFT]" wrote: > "Missy" <Missy@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:CA9ACA99-1099-4DCC-A0DE-D194716CA9E7@microsoft.com... > > Oh and by the way.... Could be the mouse drivers, but that sounds like a strange thing to be happening. Sorry we couldn't get you setup before your vacation. Sorry it's so cloudy, when you get back try posting your Quake .CFG files. Maybe something in there is screwy. Like it's not saving your settings correctly. Try the game in a window maybe? just to test it, press Alt+Enter to switch to windowed mode. Have fun on "holiday", Andy |

| | Re: Quake 4 - not working Andy Its not cloudy anymore... and, would you believe it, Quake now works perfectly! I played about with compatibility... ran it in mode for windows XP (service pack2) and disabled visual themes and scaling on high DPI settings. To be honest, I have absolutely NO idea what I was doing, just played about and after I had done this particular selection the mouse worked just fine. Dont know what that says about Quake 4, Vista, my mouse or what - but it might help you if you get any similar questions. Thanks for your support/interest - made me feel like I wasnt trying to solve it all by myself! Of course now,,,Im having to fit Quake into my sunbathing schedule <g> Thanks again, Missy Kisssssssss "Andy [YaYa]" wrote: > "Missy" <Missy@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:5F308B95-48F3-4508-AE49-11E32B083B1A@microsoft.com... > > Andy, thanks so much for the reply! Everything from Commander Keen through Doom 3. http://www.steampowered.com Glad you got it working. If you feel like experimenting, try turning off XP mode, run the game again, if still ok try removing another like the high DPI settings. Probably just one of those Vista "features" causing the problem. I think we took all your clouds over to San Francisco... Andy |

Everything from Commander Keen through >> Doom 3. http://www.steampowered.com I actually re-purchased several games on Steam simply because Steam is pretty convienent, if I'm at a friends house I can login and download something to play quite easily. I don't have to worry about having the CDs or copy protection problems, and the chat system isn't too bad either. Can't wait for the new steam communities to launch. If you can find an old Half-Life CD you can send the key in and you can play Half-Life and other stuff for nothing. It's a good system, I'm glad iD choose it instead of trying to do their own thing. |
