Freelancer stay connected to external servers

I installed freelancer on Vista Ultimate and I am able to play single player
just fine, even join a server that I create, after disabling IPv6 of course.
Once I join an external server (lan, internet, etc) it works fine until I
launch. After that I get the connection problem on the top left and it laggs
out. Other PC's trying to join the server I created also time out in the
same fashion, whether they are on XP or Vista. I then went on to disable
UAC, Firewall, Defender, and uninstalled anti-virus (nod32). Restarted, and
still the same problems.

Other forums were talking about directplay not being supported, so I
installed directx 9, but that also didn't work.

Anyone get this to work? Is vista going to support directplay? This is
Microsoft's game after all...

Actually it's Digital Anvil's Game...

I'd recommend an XP partition, game was, even under the best of conditions,
a bit buggy in the online dept.

I guess DirectPlay was required for Freelancer, seem to recall something
about that. Though no reason Vista wouldn't have it. Try
http://www.microsoft.com/directx, get the latest directx installer (called
dxwebsetup.exe) and run it, make sure all your files are where they should
be.

I'd pull out my copy of Freelancer, but it's still sealed, maybe I can find
a copy somewhere.
