Vista and Games

I am a Dungeon's and Dragons Online (DDO) player. I just upgraded to Windows
Vista Home Basic.

Now, I have noticed when I play this game in full screen mode 1440x900 (all
options on) I get around 20-25 frames per second (fps). When I drop the
resolution to 800x600, I still only get 20-25 fps. When I turn off all of
the options, and put the settings in lowest quality mode, I still get 20-25
fps.

Now, here is the goofy part. I drop this to a window at (Higest Res)
1440x900, I get 60 fps, with all options on. So I do know that my computer
is capable of displaying this game in fluid motion with all graphic options
available.

So my question is, why do I get a significantly lower frame rate in full
screen mode, but at the same resolution get a much higher frame rate in
windowed mode?

Short Answer: I have no idea.

Long Answer: Eye have know idea.

personally I can't tell the diff between 30fps and 60. Could also be the
game, the way Vista composes your desktop now is a bit different than how XP
does it, you can try running the game with all the visual enhancements
turned off (make your desktop look like XP again), it's under the System
Advanced Settings. (Right-click computer icon, click Properties, the
advanced system settings, visual effects, adjust for best performace, ok,
ok)

DDO, pre-vista game, call the software maker (Turbine Software) and ask
them.

Re: Vista and Games

I think you're missing the point. If all of the visual enhancement settings
are on, while this game is in windowed mode... it should run slower than it
does in full screen mode.

And I contacted Turbine, and they told me they don't fully support Vista's
issues. Their game does run under Vista, and that's as far as they can take
it.

Re: Vista and Games

Is this a laptop computer or a desktop computer? By looking at your
screen resolution, I would say laptop with widescreen display.
Laptops have a harder time rendering high action games even with graphics
chipsets that have their own RAM; especially the widescreen types because
of the odd screen geometry not being fully supported by many games.
By the way; Windowed mode does not mean slower performance.
In fact it means quite the opposite: When you window a program, you are
telling your graphics hardware to only render a specific part of your
screen actively, and as such it dedicates all it's power to that window,
which is smaller and easier to handle.
The downside is you'll have what looks like a smaller viewing area
depending on what in-game resolution setting you use.
I play all my games in windowed mode if the games support it, and get
better performance than fullscreen mode on my old Geforce 4
Ti4200/128/AGP desktop.
Plus I can still see and harass my friends on messenger while playing.

Well I may be missing the point, but over the weekend I decided I don't care
