Most online games work on Vista in exactly the same way as XP.

What particular one(s) are you having problems with?

Java Virtual Machine Download Links - Download JVMs

Note: MS Java will only work with a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser that is Version 5 or later.

Once you've downloaded the program and scanned it for any malware, follow these steps:
Click Save when prompted.
At the top of the next window, there will be an area that says "Save in:". Immediately to the right, there is a drop-down box where you can select where you want to save the file. Make sure this is set to Desktop (It is the upper most list option)
Click Save. (The file will take anywhere from 1-40 minutes to download, depending on how fast your connection is.)
Once the file is downloaded, find the file named msjavx86_3805.exe. It will be located on your Desktop background.
Double-click the file to start the installation.
When asked "Would you like to install the Microsoft VM?", click Yes.
When installation is complete, you may need to restart your computer.

Next, uninstall the Sun Java Plug-in:
Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.
Select Control Panel (this may be under 'Settings' on the Start Menu).
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
Click Java 2 Runtime environment, SE v1.4.2_01. (Note that the version number may also be SEv1.5 or higher.)
Click Remove.
Follow the prompts to uninstall it.
Also, be sure to remove any "J2SE Runtime Environment..." items as well.

Now completely close all browser windows and try playing again. You're now using the Microsoft Java VM.
