Moving data to external usb HD

HP laptop with 2GB RAM and 2.2Ghz Centrino Duo.
Windows Vista Business 32 bit.
I have just plugged in my new LaCie 500GB USB 2.0 external hard drive.
Windows did it's installing drivers thing and all is good.

I selected some folders containing approx 350 files and totaling 34GB and am
moving them to this new volume.

The dialogue is currently saying 3 hours remaining (it was 5 hours about 10
minutes ago).
Is this slow speed expected?

I have no idea what the benchmark for this sort of transfer would be, nor do
I understand the finer points of read/write transfer rates.

Anything I can do to speed things up?

10 minutes later and we are on 47 minutes remaining.
I suppose a better way to ask my question (giving the massive fluctuations
in minutes remaining) is how long would you expect 1 GB to transfer across
on the above set-up?

Re: Moving data to external usb HD

There are some issues with the accuracy depending on the system, but I have
found it not to be dependable. On the opposite, a Backup of 43 GBs worth of
data using Complete PC Back up in Vista x64 took 35 to 40 mins here.

AMD Turion X2 2.0
2 GBs of RAM
ATI 256 MB GPU

Took 1:47 to copy a 1GB file from my Dell laptop to an external USB drive.
Xcopying 178 files that were approx. 1GB took 1:38.

I've got that beat.

Two Sata drives. With NCQ 7200 RPM With 16mb cache. Sata 300 And it took
2+hours to copy 40gigs. The transfer rate is a joke. Yeah vista is better
then XP heheheh..

Sorry... that was a minute and 47 seconds, not an hour and 47 minutes. It
was just a gig of data. Just trying to baseline it. 40x1:47 is... uh...
lemme fire up the calculator... is approximately 71 minutes.

But, yeah, the file copy fubar performance it my biggest complaint with
Vista.
