Vista Tutorial - Problem Deleting Files

After installing Adobe's Creative Suite 3, I lost Control Panel and had to do
a system restore back to a point before the install. I'm now having
difficulty reinstalling CS3. Adobe tech support tells me I need to remove any
remaining files before trying the reinstall. My problem is that I've already
removed the program using the normal uninstall, run Adobe's uninstall scripts
which also uses the WIndows clean-up utiltiy, tried to remove straglers
byaltering permissions on file properties. I've been able to remove all but
the following files and folders:

Adobe\
Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\
Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\acrotray
Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\adistres.dll
Adobe\Acrobat Elements\
Adobe\Acrobat Elements\ContextMenu.dll
CommonFiles\Adobe\
CommonFiles\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\
CommonFiles\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll
CommonFiles\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroPDF
CommonFiles\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\pdfshell

I'm guessing these files/folders must be corrupt. The system tells me I
don't have permission to delete but I have full administrator access on some
of the files and on others I am unable to change the permissions. Does anyone
have any ideas on how I can delete these? I have a fairly new Sony laptop
with Vista Home Premium and don't really want to take my machine back to a
full recovery. Any advice? Is it worth the cost of calling Microsoft support?

I have personally found the best way to remove certain applications is
through Diagnostics Mode. Open MSCONFIG > (Win + R) > General (tab) >
Diagnostics Startup > click OK. Click Restart when the prompt appears. When
you are in Diagnostics mode, try uninstalling again. But in this case, you
have already uninstalled, so I would reinstall the application then follow
my suggested instructions.

System restore seems to be what got me into my predicament in the first place
- it seems to have left a subset of the Adobe files installed files on the
system. Either that or the CS3 install package installed some files before
erroring out when I attempted the reinstall. In any case, Adobe says the CS3
installer won't work unless the system is free of all Adobe files. So, my
first problem to solve is getting rid of the Adobe files that are on my
system. Is it safe to run the Adobe uninstall script and Windows cleanup
utility in diagnostics mode? I don't have any program listing in CS3 in the
Control Panel program list any more. Any other suggestions?

Vista uninstaller does a very poor job of removing all parts of a program.
Sometimes the proprietary removal tool can help, you can do a manual
uninstall, but the best way to get rid of all remnants of a program, failed
download and install, or failed uninstall is using Smarty Uninstaller. Until
you clean your system of this debris, you won't be able to install the new
program. You can access Smarty Uninstaller and how-to manual uninstall at
the tutorial link below.

To assist with a manual uninstall as far as being able to modify (copy,
delete, rename) you can take Ownership of (in your Username) and grant
yourself Full Control permissions of the files or folders in question
described in the following tutorial. Another way to gain access to modify
files and folders includes going to the Start button, typing in Windows
Explorer, right-clicking on this and selecting Run As Administrator. You
should then have "elevated privileges" to do whatever you wish to files in
Windows Explorer. There is also a program called Unlocker that you can use
to gain access to modify files and folders (see link below).
