Why Win FORMAT E: - invalid?

Formatting CD's, I always get the notice, "(formatng e; FORMAT invalid?".
Why?

How about just a tiny bit more information? How are you formatting? What
media are you using? Stuff like that.

Your E: drive probably contains a backup of your operating system and is
write protected.
You can select another letter higher in the alphabet for your CD's.

unless it is a CD-RW, formatting will ruin a CD-R
so it would say 'invalid'
