Hi I FLY,

Here are some common things that can eat up your hard drive space to check.

1. "System Restore" Points Maximum Disk Space Usage.
See: System Restore - disk space

or you can disable System Restore.
See: System Restore

2.The "Vista Temp files" may be building up and need to be cleaned. You can use Disk Cleanup to delete these files.
See: Disk Cleanup

Hope this helps,
Shawn

System Restore uses many of GBs of the drives space.

I have System Restore switched off and use Acronis TrueImage (System
State backup) to backup to my second HDD. This allows me to take full
control over my system as I can save the System State when I want to and
to were I store the backup.

Re: Hard drive capacity keeps dropping

So, what is the problem, exactly? Is the system sluggish or otherwise
misbehaving? Or is it simply that the HD shows less space available?

From your information, it would seem that there is plenty of available
space on the HD. You do not report anything unusual.

The system will use drive space for various things like e-mail storage,
temporary file space for the internet browser, disk caching, temporary
file space for file downloads and copy/paste operations. So, keep a eye
on it for a while to get a feel for normal operations. However, unless
other symptoms such as sluggishness or system freezes develop, I would
not get concerned.

Marco,

It really depends on if you keep good backups or not. System Restore can be helpful in fixing some problems by restoring the computer back to like it was on one of the restore points. If you have good backups, then you can disable System Restore to save a junk of hard drive space. You should have good backups anyway since System Restore point files will most likely not be up to date with your current computer files. I would say which is more important to you.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
