When the operating system

When the operating system is controlling the page file size, etc., in what
partition or partitions does the operating system put the page file?

The one the operating system is installed on- the system drive.

Re: When the operating system

It places on the same drive as Windows itself, and unless you have a second
physical disk installed, that is the best place for it..

Re: When the operating system

As I have partitions, would the OS put the page file on the partition I
booted?

Yes. The boot partition is the "System Drive", as referred to by the other posters. This is where Windows prefers to keep it's page file.

You can change the location and size of your paging file as follows:
  1. Right-click on Computer, then select properties
  2. Click Advanced system settings. You will need to respond to a UAC prompt
  3. Under Advanced, click Settings
  4. Go to the Advanced tab
  5. Under Virtual Memory, click Change
  6. Turn off Automatically manage paging file size for all drives
  7. Now you can set a Custom Size, System Managed Size or No paging File
While this information is good to know, I do not recommend that you do it, and leave the defaults alone, and allow Windows to decide whats best for you system. Experience with my own computers and those I've serviced in the line of duty has taught me that incorrect settings or adjustments to the paging file can and in most cases will lead to serious degration of performance.

Leave the paging file alone.

Re: When the operating system

The page file should be in the same partition as the operating system or in
a partition on a separate hard drive.. DO NOT put the page file into a
partition on the same drive as the OS..

You mean "DON'T put the paging file on a different partition that exists on the same physical drive as the OS (Boot) Partition"? (Sorry for the correction, Mike, just your phrasing sounds a little obscure)

The paging file should preferably be on the same partition as the OS itself, unless you're running out of space, in which case it's better to just get a bigger hard disk so that the paging file doesn't have such an impact?
