DVD Playback

I have a problem with playing DVD's in Vista that has me puzzled.

The DVD's will start to play just fine. They show the FBI Warning
etc. But the second that they should start playing the menus etc, WMP
errors out with the following error.

C00D1163
A problem occurred with digital copyright protection

This occurs on any commercial DVD that I try to play.

I have a few DVD's that I have burned in the past on my own though and
they play just fine.

Any ideas as to what is up with WMP and the error on the commercial
DVDs?

The web help is no help at all.

RE: DVD Playback

Yep, that's what I get too.

If you have any other DVD player, they work. PowerDVD 6 Deluxe plays the
copy protected, normal Hollywood movie DVD's fine. It just turns off Aero
while it runs, and Windows warns of a compatibility problem. Despite the
warning, it's fine. I needed to turn off the PowerDVD toolbar in its player
options, as it stays there without auto-hiding.

Nero 6 Ultra Edition's Nero Showtime works too. I've read that VLC
MediaPlayer works on Vista. That's supposed to be a good free alternative.

I'm guessing it's some problem of interaction with all the not really ready
for Vista Video/Audio drivers that are available.

My Visualizations in WMP 11 also are a problem. They only work for cd's,
but not my mp3's in my Music folder. This is probably a driver interaction
problem. I have the Audigy 2 ZS XP driver and AudioConsole installed. If I
toggle to a different Audio Quality setting in Windows PlayControl (16/44 or
16/48) I can get visualizations for one song before they disappear again.

RE: DVD Playback

On a fresh install, PowerDVD 7 Deluxe also worked. Registration required
that I find the weirdly named file that registers it and right
click/Compatibility tab/give it adm rights. Then running the register
shortcut works. Of course, this is not a free method!

I think WMP 11 is supposed to play them. Probably a bug in the system.
I've heard that VLC Media Player (free) also works. That plays DVD's.
