Unzip In Vista is way too slow

Hi,

I've bought a laptop with Vista Business on it.

I'm Unzipping a 12 MB zip file onto the C drive of the vista machine.

This is taking around 45 seconds while unzipping from a USB Key. It takes 35
seconds to unzip from the Hard Drive.

On XP this is taking 4-5 seconds from the USB Key.

I've turned off AntiVirus and it's not making much difference. Search
Indexing is switched off.

I have applied KB941600 and KB941649

When I tried to apply KB938979 it told me that it wasn't for this system. (I
downloaded the 32 bit version and I have 32 bit vista business)

I've been researching the slow file copy problem and that seems to have been
solved with the aid of those hotfixes, but this unzip problem is driving my
user and me to frustration.

Is there a way to turn off the "Calculating Time Remaining" message window
as this may be taking longer to run than the actual unzip operation.

Thanks in Advance

Robert

Re: Unzip In Vista is way too slow

Well, use a third party solution, Shawn has been suggesting this one:
'7-Zip' (http://www.7-zip.org/)

Re: Unzip In Vista is way too slow

Thanks,

I was hoping for a solution to the vista decompression utitlity seeing as it
was working fine in xp, what's been done by microsoft to break it?

Is the problem with the built in zip/unzip or is there a problem with the
whole file system and the handling of files?

I've read a lot of posts about the poor performance of file handling in
vista.

Re: Unzip In Vista is way too slow

There is still an on going debate over the file transfer performance, the
only possible solution I can think of is to ensure that you have the latest
performance update for Windows Vista installed:
Vista x86:

Re: Unzip In Vista is way too slow

I tried to install that update but it said it wasn't for my system!
I did download the x86 version of the file.

I'm quite angry with Microsoft for releasing Vista before it's ready, I've
wasted 8 hours of my time in a small business trying to get it to do
something that XP does without fault.

I'm replacing my desktops with laptops, and I won't be buying any more that
have Vista on until Service pack 2 comes out.

If I had the time, I would send the laptop back to my supplier and get
another one with XP on but I've wasted well over 2 days on this new laptop.
It's time that I and millions of others around the world can ill afford.

When will microsoft release an OS that works out of the box? They really
should let the developers and project managers take the lead with releases
and put the PR and Marketing people in the shed without telephones and
internet. I know they need to make money and they are a business that is
responsible for employing thousands of people around the world. But please,
please, please only sell goods that are fit for purpose. Under the sale of
goods act in the UK a product must be fit for purpose, otherwise it can be
taken back to the retailer for a refund. If everyone took back vista,
microsoft would be in a sorry state now as it would cost more to administer
that than they have generated from the sale of vista.

For gods sake, make sure that "Son of Vista" works first time! I know that
it's us humans that program the bugs into code but it's mostly the extra
features that cause problems, not the core areas of software products that
are used daily. Where were the testers in all this? Were they in the shed?
