Do I need to Install a DVD Drive?

I have Windows Vista Home Basic and I downloaded the windows vista update
advisor. It said I can download windows vista but I dont have the DVD Drive.
I only want to use windows vista to play games. Do I really need to get a DVD
Drive?

Re: Do I need to Install a DVD Drive?

You don't need a DVD drive to use the Windows Upgrade Advisor. Certain games
come on DVDs now, so you might need a DVD to install the OS and install
certain programs. So its recommended you get one.

Re: Do I need to Install a DVD Drive?

A DVD drive can be obtained almost anywhere, even WalMart.
For a DVD Player they are as cheap as $29 for a burner $49.
Most are an easy installation, the instructions are in the box.

Hi Russell,

You can send your Vista DVD back to Microsoft and they'll send you CD
version for a small shipping fee.
However, while Microsoft do provide CD versions for those who request it,
this may not all ways be the case and certainly not the case for the newer
games that are being released.

You'd be well advised to put the money towards getting a DVD drive. If you
don't have the technical knowledge to do a self install of a DVD drive, it
may be worth asking friends and family if they know anyone who can do it.
Most will be willing to do it for free and they may even have a spare DVD
drive that they're not using anymore.

Re: Do I need to Install a DVD Drive?

For a download, no you don't 'need' one. However, with costs of DVD
drives (or DVD writers for that matter) fairly low (under $30 for a
great DVD writer), you may want to pick one up. The Vista media itself
comes in DVD format. Did Vista Basic come with your PC? It's strange
that the manufacturer didn't include a DVD-ROM.

Seeing that he said he was running the upgrade advisor, I'd say that he
is upgrading/about to upgrade an older PC.
