Will Windows Aero user interface work on my PC ?

I have a 3000+ AMD Barton XP with 1.5GB DDR333, ATI AIW 9800 Pro 128mb
graphic card and plan on putting Vista on a WD 150GB Raptor SATA HD. Is
dual-channel memory required for Aero ?

Re: Will Windows Aero user interface work on my PC ?

Yes, but you have ensure that your card has a supported WDDM (Windows Driver
Display Model) with support for Direct X 9, with support for Shader 2.0
Pixel technologies. Dual Channel memory is not required.

But, for systems that use shared memory on integrated graphics chipsets, 1
GB of dual channel configured system memory (RAM) is required. The system
system needs to have at least 512 MB of RAM Available for general system
activities after graphics processing. You don't need to worry about this
though.

ATI claims somewhere that all ATI cards 9500 and up will support the Aero
effects. Here my ATI 9250 doesn't, but my 9600se does. The Aero effects so
far don't count for much. There's a slight translucency on the windows
frames, a neat little WindowsKey + Tab which outdoes alt + tab .. but which
is not significantly more useful than the XP Power Toy Alt + Tab replacement
... and that's about it so far .. even Microsft isn't bothering with Areo in
the standard edition of Windows Vista so it can't be that important.

It's certainly with in the specs. I'm considering installing the next drop
of Vista on a machine with similar specs and the same graphics card this
coming week - time will tell. 8-)

No. Running on my current machine Athlon 64 3200, w/ 2GB of PC3200 (single
channel, this is a Socket 754 board) and a Radeon 850XT PE great.

Windows Vista Home Basic will use Aero Basic, you won't get certain effects
though such as Live Thumbnail previews and the translucent window effects.

Re: Will Windows Aero user interface work on my PC ?

You do have to be careful with drivers however. Ati is different from Nvidia
I know, but updating my drivers to the correct LDDM drivers for my version
of Vista screwed up the Aero Glass and removed the LDDM drivers.

Make sure there are compatible LDDM drivers as Andre said - should be OK
after that. Check out this though:

Minimum requirements for Aero Glass:

Re: Will Windows Aero user interface work on my PC ?

Thanks guys, the reason I asked about the dual channel memory requirements
is it said the following on Dells website:" To run the Windows Vista Aero
experience, Microsoft recommends: a.. A system with a dual core or Pentium -
class processor
b.. A minimum of 1GB or more of Dual Channel memory (two or more
memory modules) or 512 MB of system memory PLUS a premium graphics card such
as ATI or NVIDIA
c.. A more fully featured system which can provide a richer
experience"
