| Guest | Close Programs I am new to Vista.....when I would install new Software on my WindowsXP PC I would always get the message to close all Programs before continuing with the install. To close all non esentual programs I used ENDITALL2, a free utilty available on the web....it worked great. I am sure installing software on a Vista system that the same prodcedure is recommended, close all programs. ENDITALL2 does not indicate it is Vista Ready. Is there a program available for Vista that will close all non-nedded Programs before you proceed to install New Software? A free one? |

This message is intended to protect any unsaved data you may have open in an application in case the installer for the new program requires a restart. In most cases, whether there are any applications open or not is irrelevant. You can safely install your software without the need to close applications first, and you most certainly do not need a third-party utility to help with this. What happens if this utility closes something that it shouldn't (i.e. Something required by the installer service) ? |

Yes, most program installations tell you to do that, so that if the new program tries to install a new version of some shared dll, it will be accepted. However in practice, it's hardly ever necessary. Only very rarely is this an issue. My personal practice has always been to ignore the warning, not use programs like enditall, and just go ahead with the installation. Worst case, if problems wit the installation result, you can always just redo the installation, following the recommendation the second time. I've never had a problem doing that, and if I've ever even needed to redo the installation, I can't remember it. It's the program installer that tells you to do that, not the operating system. Quote: > ENDITALL2 does not indicate it is Vista > Ready. I don't know, but my recommendation is just to ignore the warnings. Such a program isn't necessary. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

| Guest | RE: Close Programs A lot of software manufacturers advise you to temporarily disable your anti-virus while installing particular software. I don't take that advice either; I simply close all open programs on the desktop.
