    firefox and IE7 incompatibility?

I recently switched to Firefox. It is acting as the default internet browser. But some of the programs (e.g. MSN messenger and Yahoo Messenger) still use IE7 as their default browser. Whenever I click a link within Yahoo Messenger, the IE7 will pop up, then it will get stuck and can not be turned off. Is this due to some incompatibility between IE7 and Firefox? How can I fix it?

Some applications are just hard coded to open Internet Explorer 7 as the
default browser. Services such as Windows Update for example use IE by
default and since Windows Live Messenger is a Microsoft product, I assume it
might also be set to open by default with IE only.
