BSOD at random times.

Hi, Ive been watching the threads now for a solution to my BSOD problem and
unfortunately no one seems to have the same problem.
The BSOD seems to appear at the most random times, whilst on the internet
browsing, uploading pictures and just generally doing normal stuff.
I have now backed up all my files and folders and removed as many things
from it as possible to get the hard disk space back to normal thinking that
was the problem but I am still getting the BSOD and now I have no idea what
is wrong with it.
The only thing I can tell you about it (because its all mumbo jumbo to me)
is that it asks to check my memory and disk space (which I did and all seems
normal) and that it does a crash dump, sometimes, if Im lucky. Most times it
just sits on the blue screen and I need to restart it manually.
I am running vista home premium on a compaq Presario F500 and Ive had it
since june.
I hope this is enough information for you, if not, I will try to get the
necessary info for you.
thanks

Can you tell us what the error message is, as well as the STOP code provided, and does the BSOD mention or provide a filename of sorts that could belong to a driver?

But while I do not wish to dismiss the possibility of a bad driver, but the random nature of your BSOD problem could be an indication of overheating and/or failing hardware.

The next time you get a BSOD, reset the computer and go into the BIOS. Check your PC Health (or Hardware Monitor) and make a note of the CPU and Case temp. These could be important in helping to solve the issue if it is hardware.

If the computer can stay on long enough without a BSOD, try going to the manufacturers website to download updated drivers.

Also, what are the CPU, Motherboard, Memory, Display, HDD and PSU Rating specs of your PC.

Re: BSOD at random times.

hi, I have taken all my files and games and things off the laptop and I
haven't had a BSOD since saturday. I presume that because I havent had one,
it was to do with the hard disk space or memory?
I couldnt tell you what the screen says, I never copied it down when it came
up and now since I'm not getting it anymore I can't tell you hehe
Do you think I maybe just needed more memory or more space or something?
thanks

Re: BSOD at random times.

Taken all the un-needed files off laptop, Doubful hardware related but did sound like it. Laptop with low memory and full hard drive. Probably running out of pagefile space. Lesson learnt I hope Leolaird. I would upgrade the memory in your laptop, the performance boost of using memory instead of the hard drive will be staggering.

not sure what you mean by "lesson learnt" but I will upgrade the memory and
see what happens.

Good to hear the BSODs are gone, but that still doesn't tell us what caused it.

Since it would appear to be related to the hard disk and/or memory, and the removal of some games, perhaps you can tell me which games it was that you removed, what is the capacity of your hard disk and how much free space do you have both before and after uninstalling the games?

Re: BSOD at random times.

Hi again, I got a BSOD twice today, both screens said:

Check for adaquate disk space etc

***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x77AF1F2A, 0X9BD17D64, 0x00000000)

Check with hardware vendor for BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options
such as caching or shadowing.

Not a clue what that means so any explanations in plain English would be
greatly appreciated thanks.

Re: BSOD at random times.

Shadowing the BIOS means to copy the contents of your BIOS memory into ram. This will give it a slight increase in speed. Never heard of this causing errors before but you need to go into your bios to change it. It will tell you how to do this in your manual.
