Vista - when in my mail program I cannot cut & paste just parts

We got a new laptop with Vista on it. The problem I am having is when
I am lookng at gmail for example, the pointer is a hand the entire time
I am over the mail. So I cannot select for example a ups tracking
number out of an email and just paste it somewhere else. My only
option is selecting the whole thing. I never had this problem with xp.
I can't figure out how to get the hand to be a pointer. If anybody
can tell me how to fix this I would be so grateful !! Thanks!

The cursor becomes a hand whenever you are in PDF files?!?!
