Re: Lost cd key for Windows Vista Home Premium

Guys thanx for your help the only part of the box that I have left is the
actual cd/dvd holder. The box was opened to show the contents at customs in
Miami and in doing so he had to rip it, didn't have a knife or scissors to do
this. Without thinking he chucked the box away and kept the cd/dvd holder
thus no product key. Oh well...

On mine the sticker is on the back of the hinge down bit that holds the DVD.
There are only two pieces to the case so you should still have the sticker.
Unless there are different cases that is.

Nope no sticker I think they must have used a sledge hammer to open the box
and then a chainsaw to make sure it was open;-)

Hi all. Now this is going to sound like you have heard it all before but this
is the truth. A friend of mine bought me Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade
disc when he went to the USA a week ago. While going thru customs he had to
open all sealed boxes in his hand luggage and he must have dropped the cd key
for the vista disc. I was wondering if there is any way of finding the key
legally or if it is possible just to purchase a new key from Microsoft and if
so how would I go about this. Thanx for all your help in advance.

If the key was so easily lost, it must be OEM since the retail key is
affixed to the case in a way making it nearly impossible to lose.
If it is retail, open the case and look on the back.
If OEM, contact the seller on the slim chance they can help.

For retail, if you open the package and throw the package away, there
is only the DVD and documentation, no box.
OEM does not come in a box.
However OEM is shrink wrapped with the Product Key on the wrapper.

    You may also try:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326246
But don't get your hopes to high.

You may need to buy again.
The key that is missing is really what you paid for.
The media is easier to replace.

Open the case and look on the back with the case open.
There is the key for retail Windows Vista.
"A friend of mine bought me Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade

That suggests it is retail since OEM upgrade may not be available.

The OP stated that the Key was lost on a new disk during airport bag inspection.
Therefore the software is not installed on a PC and cannot be recovered by any software.

Basically, the OP is SOL unless a phone call to MS can convince them to release a key.

I have "Windows Vista Ultimate OEM Software".

First thing you encounter is the cardboard outer box. What is inside is sealed inside by red warning tape on both ends of the cardboard box.
If you had to tear off the cardboard because you didn't have a sharp instrument to slit/cut the tape, no big deal.
After the cardboard is removed, very visibly is the product key label on the back of the cleac plastic dvd case. This case requires no effort to open other then the normal effort required to open any dvd case as it is not specialy sealed.
