Because its intellectual property that is proprietary and uses a lot
proprietary technologies not solely owned by Microsoft and a lot of
programmers work on the product and maintain it, also the persons who
support and market the product have to paid to support themselves and their
families and go on vacations.

I got to support myself and family too so I use OpenOffice not Word as
its free. Word you have to pay. The Netherlands Gov has just moved to
Freeware Software and Hardware so OpenOffice will get a boost. I do
not want to pay for your vacation.

Good! So someone is going to pay for your services? And how can you
support your family and your vocation if everyone else is going to be like
you just want to take and not to give?

Nothing wrong with making money and it is "how" that is in question.

And I don't think the Netherlands government made the decision solely based
on it is free even though I have no objection for people to use Open Source
software and we use too but Open Source doesn't mean it must be Free!

One can question if MS is too big to endanger the ecosystem of the software
industry and some of its recent practices and product design, but to
question the fundamental principle of today's market economy system that has
been founded and defended by hundreds of thousands of people before us is
simply ridicules.

But you *fully* expect other people to pay for yours.

What's the word in your language for "hyporcite"?

There was a group in the US in the 1960's called the "Diggers" who thought
everything should be free. I wonder what ever happened to those guys.

Linux is not freeware. Linux is Open Source. There are commercial versions
of Linux - Xandros, Linspire, RHEL, SLED, . . .

Except you can get all the commercial distros free if you want to.
So they are essentially freeware even if they have a price tag.

Well, that's fine, but they are still not freeware - they are open source
- significant difference.

Yes, you can theoretically have most commercial Linux distros free if you
want to go through the bother of finding, downloading and compiling all
the source code. You will, of course, be missing any proprietary
extensions. That's part of the difference.
