Programs fail to launch from start menu

Hi I have been having this problem, using Vista Ultimate does not matter if a
game or even a program and also includes windows update. I have tried a warm
reboot and even a total shut down, this is a problem and want to make sure
the OS is stable before adding in my business programs. Anyone with any
thoughts let me know
Thanks Jeff

Re: Programs fail to launch from start menu

You need to rephrase your post and rethink what you are saying because I
can't seem to understand it. Are you having problems running applications,
which apps are these? Did you install them with Administrative privileges,
have you check the manufacturers website to see if they are compatible with
Vista or check for updates or patches that will enable compatibility under
Vista?

Re: Programs fail to launch from start menu

Hi the programs are windows installed programs in the games section and the
windows update even, they are the recently run programs in the left hand side
when you hit the start button. The programs are all part of the Vista system
not 3rd party programs. in the quick launch the IE browser opens fine and
goes to which ever site you direct but will not go to the Windows update
site. This was a fresh install not a update as I was not happy with Vista
business so I bought Ultimate and formatted the drive and did a fresh load.

Re: Programs fail to launch from start menu

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories and right-click
on the Command Prompt and choose "Run as administrator".
Type in: SFC /SCANNOW and press your Enter key.

If that does not work, try repairing your system. Boot from your Windows
Vista DVD, select the System Repair Option > on the setup screen, select
'Repair Computer > Select your installation of Windows > select Startup
Repair option and follow instructions.

Re: Programs fail to launch from start menu

Scan shows 99% verification, Windows protection found corrupt but was unable
to fix some of them. details in CBS.log file but access is denied. Will doing
the reboot off disk and repair fix these issues or should I just bit ethe
bullit and reload as I can't have any problms with the system once the
business files are set up on the new system. Thanks in advance Andre for the
advice.

Re: Programs fail to launch from start menu

Hi again Andre
Well reloaded the system, and ran into the same issues, programs not
responding or opening with just the OS installed. I went into the bio's and
shut off the OS is plug and play and reinstalled agin though only a couple of
updates at a time very time consuming as you know. Then all was workin
without issue. Installed the driers supplied by ASUS for the board, Windows
recommended that I install the oler chipset drivers which it did each time
this time I said no use the newer chipset drivers that came with the board,
installed the rest of the software AV and small items. Made a complete system
back up while all was ok through out the install and when I was done blew
away the BU reformated the back up drive and made a fresh image of the drive
incase of and future problems, which hopefully will lever need to be used.
Only had 1 incident when the control panel would not open but I just rebooted
and made a shortcut to it on the desktop so hopefully that will work if the
other does not. Had the same issues when XP first came out except most
hardware would work with it out of the box except a few vid cards and sound
cards. I bet I ran scannow 20 times on the last load trying to figure out
which update caused the corupt file system, but each time it passed I backed
up the drive and went on. I know in the future these small issues will be
dealt with. I really only installed this OS as all the new computers are
coming with it and when I get calls about problems I need to be able to help
as this is a small town and the nearest help is at least a half hour away.
Thanks for the tip on SFC /scannow as that was the best tool I had available
to be sure everything was going alright.
Thank You
