| | Vista hangs many times just after boot Hi all ! I am using Vista beta 2 on a notebook HP Pavilion DV4000, with 1 GB RAM, and I am facing a strange behavior: When it is turned off for a while and I boot it, after logon, if I try to utilize Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer or some other softwares in it, it hangs the software and everything else hangs. There is no way at all to close or kill the hanging process. Any other software cannot be loaded without hanging. I cannot kill the hanging process using Task Manager, and, if I utilize the command TASKKILL with all possible options, it says that the process is killed, but it remains in the Task Manager. In this situation, I have to turn off and turn on the computer because nothing else works (restart does not work), and this behavior repeats three or four times, since without a clear reason it works fine after that, and remains stable all day long. But if I turn it off, maintaing it turned off for a while, and turn it on again, the problem occurs again. While this problem is happening I did many different tries, as booting without network connected, with network connected, waiting for some time before loging on, using only bateries, using AC, etc. Important: I was utilizing XP before without any problem at all. Does anybory know what could be going on? Or have suggestions for a more precise diagnostic? Thanks for the help. Duarte. |

| | Re: Vista hangs many times just after boot I, too, have a dv4000 from HP with 1GB RAM and very little trouble with Vista. If at all possible I suggest you return to an XP environment then do as I list below. Before installing Vista I used Partition Magic to create a partition just for Vista. Now when I start my PC I have a choice to boot into Vista or XP. On the Vista partition I also installed MS Office 2007 beta - it works great! I use the "My Documents" folder on the C partition for all documents in either XP or Vista. So whenever I decide to delete my Vista or reinstall, I don't lose any documents. I also direct all downloads to my C partition for the same reason. In Vista, my wireless works, so does the Bluetooth mouse and DVD drive (I have heard of some users losing access to their DVD drive.) I did have to download the latest display drivers from ATI in order to use Aero Glass features in Vista. Also the battery runs down a lot quicker in Vista than XP Maybe I have just had good luck with this installation, but it seems to run okay.. -Paul in Orlando, FL |

| | Re: Vista hangs many times just after boot Thanks Paul, for the reply and help. But, I understand I got the problem and the solution (in my case) for this issue. Since I installed Vista, I have been using Avast 4.7 as Antivirus. Among many tries to solve the problem during the last days, I stopped Avast services, turned them to manual, did not use the antivirus, and the problem disappeared. I worked without problems for two days. Then I restarted Avast, and the problem appeared again. My conclusion is that there is something wrong in my Vista installation generating this issue when Avast is running. I suspect that it is not a general problem in Avast, since we have reports that it works fine with Vista. But, in my case, I substituted it by AVG antivirus, and no problem at all !!!
